YOUR DATA, ON YOUR DEVICE
Privacy Policy
Copy & Paste History is a Chrome extension maintained by NaStenku. It helps you find and reuse text you copy on supported web pages. This policy describes the extension and this GitHub Pages website.
1. Information the extension handles
The extension listens for ordinary copy and cut actions on supported HTTP and HTTPS pages. It handles and stores:
- The plain text you copy or cut.
- The source page’s domain name, such as example.com.
- The time the clip was captured, a locally generated clip identifier, and whether you pinned it.
- Your pause setting.
The full source URL is available to the background process to identify the domain. Only the hostname is retained as source metadata; URL paths, query parameters, and page titles are not stored separately. If the text you copy is itself a URL, that text is stored as copied, including any path or parameters it contains.
The extension does not keep a log of every website you visit, monitor copies from other applications, or save images or rich-text formatting. Search terms are used in the popup to filter saved clips and are not retained as search history.
2. How information is used
Saved data is used to display and search your history, identify links, remove duplicate clips, pin entries, manage storage limits, and let you copy or paste text again. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or sale.
Clicking a clip writes its text to your system clipboard. Other software may access that clipboard according to your device’s permissions. Choosing Paste sends the selected clip to the active supported page and inserts it into the selected editable field. That website can read and handle the inserted text under its own privacy practices, including through autosave or input handlers. The extension does not itself submit the form.
3. Local storage and security
History and the pause preference are stored in Chrome’s local extension storage on your device. They are not synced by this extension. The extension restricts direct access to its stored history to trusted extension contexts; page scripts cannot directly request the history through its messaging interface.
The extension does not add its own encryption layer to local storage. Device access, browser-profile access, operating-system protections, and any backups you use affect the security of this data. Avoid retaining secrets or other sensitive material you do not want in your clipboard history.
4. Sensitive fields and capture limits
The extension skips password input fields and input fields whose autocomplete attribute identifies passwords, payment-card details, or one-time codes. These checks are not universal detection of sensitive information. Ordinary text, unmarked fields, and selected page content may contain personal communications, financial details, or other sensitive information and may be saved.
Capture is not supported on internal Chrome pages, the Chrome Web Store, the built-in PDF viewer, or local files. Some custom website copy actions cannot be captured. Direct Paste is limited to supported editable fields on the main page.
5. Retention and your controls
- Up to 300 clips are retained, with up to 50 pinned clips and 16,000 characters per clip, subject to an overall 4 MB data limit.
- Longer selections are skipped. When a storage limit is reached, the oldest unpinned entries are removed first.
- There is no automatic time-based expiration. Pinned entries are not removed by automatic eviction or by clearing unpinned clips.
- Delete removes an individual clip. Clear unpinned clips removes unpinned entries after confirmation and keeps pinned entries and your pause preference.
- Pause stops new capture; it does not erase existing history. Resume enables capture again.
- Uninstalling the extension removes its local extension storage from that browser profile.
Removing a clip does not erase text already copied to the system clipboard, pasted into another application or website, or included in separately maintained device backups.
6. Permissions
Storage saves history and the pause setting locally. Clipboard write lets you copy a saved clip to your system clipboard. Content scripts on HTTP and HTTPS sites capture copy and cut events and insert text when you choose Paste. No permission to automatically read the system clipboard is requested.
7. Sharing and limited use
The extension does not transmit your saved history to the developer or an analytics service. Apart from placing text on your clipboard or into a page at your request, it does not share history with third parties. We do not sell saved data or use it for personalized advertising.
Our use of information received through Chrome APIs is limited to providing the extension’s clipboard-history features and complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
8. This website and GitHub
This policy website is hosted on GitHub Pages. It contains no analytics scripts, advertising, or developer-set tracking cookies. Visiting it sends normal web requests to GitHub; GitHub may process technical information such as your IP address and request logs under the GitHub Privacy Statement. Visiting this website does not give it access to your extension history.
If you use GitHub Issues for support, GitHub processes your account and message information. Issues are public: do not include clipboard contents, passwords, private URLs, or other sensitive information.
9. Changes and contact
This policy may be updated when the extension’s data practices change. The effective date above identifies the current version. For privacy questions, contact the maintainer through the project’s public support page. The developer cannot retrieve or delete your locally stored clips remotely; use the extension’s deletion controls.
